Dr. Seiichiro Tabata joined Sony and worked in the research and development of battery materials using excess biomass as raw material. In the process, his team developed a porous carbon material Triporous that has a unique micro structure using rice husks as raw material. Currently, he is promoting open innovation that takes advantage of Triporous excellent adsorption properties to solve social issues. He is also active as a member of the Ministry of the Environment’s commissioned project Development and demonstration of functional materials by optimizing the material flow of rice husks for energy use.
Sony has developed a porous carbon material Triporous that has a unique microstructure using rice husks as raw material. Rice husks are excess biomass that is generated more than 100 million tons annually worldwide, including about 2 million tons per year in Japan, and are a source of greenhouse gases and PM2.5 due to their disposal. In this lecture, Sony will present the basic characteristics and water purification technology of Triporous compared with conventional adsorbent including activated carbon, as well as its potential applications and contributions to solving social issues.
