【Profile】

Carlos BANON is an architect specializing in Digital Design and Advanced Manufacturing methods within the built environment. Banon is the Director of Airlab, Co-Founder of Subarquitectura Architects, and Associate Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design at SUTD.
He also held visiting professorships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and EPFL Lausanne. His research projects span Architectural Tectonics with Additive Manufacturing, Material Efficiency and Structural Performance Methods, Design for the Circular Economy, and Geometric Exploration for Sustainable Space Making.
His work has been selected for two editions of the Venice Biennale of Architecture and has won international awards such as the Design of the Year Prize by the London Design Museum, the Gold and Silver Medal by the International Paralympic and Olympic Committees, two Spanish Biennial Prizes, a Mies van der Rohe Prize Nomination, winner of the German Design Award and the Iconic Awards of Innovative Architecture, four Singapore Good Design Awards. His recent work was awarded the Singapore President Design Award in 2021.


【Abstract】

The session investigates the application of AM as functional components on an architectural scale for complex designs, structures, and products, with theoretical and practical implications across scales and materials. Through a series of built designs, the talk explores how digital design and additive manufacturing expands architectural practice to address environmental problems such as circularity, the transformation of waste into space, and the utilization of more adaptive and resource-efficient design strategies.

【Abstract】

Silica glass attracts considerable interest because of its excellent properties of low thermal expansion, chemical durability and mechanical strength, and high transmittance in the vacuum-ultraviolet to near-infrared region. As a result, silica glass is used for optical component, electric device etc. However, it has been extremely difficult to process glass with ultra-precision and complex shapes. In this study, we have developed glass with complex shapes using 3D laser fabrication method.
