Graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering, Nagoya University in 1989. After completing a master's degree at the Nagoya University, he joined Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. in 1991. Research Associate at Nagoya University in 1995. Dr. of Engineering from Nagoya University in 2000. Associate Professor at Nagoya University in 2002, and Professor at Chubu University in 2018. His research interests include inorganic materials chemistry and functional ceramic materials engineering.


【Abstract】

Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are indispensable as passive components in electronic circuits and are major electronic components in many devices such as mobile phones. In recent years, MLCCs have become significantly smaller and higher capacitance, with some of the smallest being as small as 0.05 mm to 0.1 mm, such as the "01005-type" capacitor. The processing technology for mass production of such capacitors while meeting not only the performance requirements but also the manufacturing cost and reliability requirements is already the creation of works of art or even the realm of master craftsmen.
In this presentation, the lecturer would like to look back at the present and past of processing technologies related to multilayer ceramic capacitors and discuss the future.

【Profile】

Satoshi Wada is a professor of Material Science and Technology at University of Yamanashi. His main research interests include dielectric and piezoelectric nanoparticles, ceramics and single crystals, nano-structure induced enhanced property, and domain engineering in ferroelectric materials. He obtained Ph.D. (1991) degrees in Material Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology. After graduation, he joined the faculty (assistant professor) at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology from 1991 to 1999. During Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, he has held visiting scientist at the Pennsylvania State University from 1996 to 1997. On 1999, he joined the faculty (assistant professor) at Tokyo institute of Technology, and promoted to an associate professor there on 2000. On 2007, he joined the faculty (associate professor) at University of Yamanashi and on 2009, promoted to full professor. He has authored more than 350 publications, 30 patents, and 10 co-authored books in the material science field. He received some awards such as the JCerSJ Best Manuscript Award of the Ceramics Society of Japan in 1997, the Young Scientist Award of Electroceramics Division in 1999, the PFEIL Award in 2005, the Richard Fulrath Award of the American Ceramics Society in 2007, the AEM Award of the Japan AEM Society in 2008, the CSJ Award of the Ceramics Society of Japan in 2009 and Ferroelectric Recognition Award of the IEEE in 2018.


【Abstract】

Materials scientists already understood that current materials can never achieve simultaneous enhancement of contradictory properties, new physical properties, and ultrahigh properties. So, what can we do to develop new and innovative materials based on new ideas? We believe that the future materials must be designed based on (1) the true-nano-structure, (2) the complex structure, and especially, (3) the interface engineering. Based on these designs, we must develop new and innovative materials for the future development.

Graduated from Tohoku University Graduate School of Engineering. Since joining TAIYO YUDEN Co., Ltd. in 1998, I have been engaged in material development and evaluation analysis of MLCC. In particular, I specialize in improving the reliability of MLCCs and investigating the degradation mechanism. Since 2021, I have been managing the research and development of new materials as a principal scientist.


【Abstract】

Today, multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are used in almost every electronic circuit and are increasingly being applied in reliable applications such as autonomous driving and communications infrastructure. As the continuous operation time of equipment increases due to automation, the time to load electronic components also increases, so MLCCs with higher reliability than ever is required. I will introduce the materials, products, manufacturing process design, and life prediction method of the actual usage environment required for that purpose.
