Opening New Avenues in Aerospace AM with Stitching Success: The Premium AEROTEC and GE Additive Story
Premium Aerotec
Mr. Thomas Bielefeld

Abstract

Premium AEROTEC and GE Additive have been partnering on the serial production of titanium parts for the aerospace industry for over five years now. Until recently, only parts that were built with a single laser per part on GE Additive's Concept Laser M2 were able to be qualified for aerospace. This limitation affected the productivity of the machines and technology. The stitching zones of the different lasers were the critical piece in the qualification. Together, we reached a major milestone with the validation of a part that was produced in line with the process qualification requirements with two corresponding lasers. Overcoming this challenge will allow a major productivity increase.

Join this webinar to learn from Dr. Bielefeld, Head of Additive Manufacturing at Premium AEROTEC, and Udo Burggraf, Senior Global and Key Account Director Aerospace at GE Additive, about the process to get to this validation and get a look into the future collaboration of the two companies.

Profile

Since 1999 he took leading positions in different industries. For ASTRIUM Space he served as Head of Production Center Tanks & Components with responsibility for satellite propulsion equipment like tanks, valves, thrusters, tubing and insulation. Joining AIRBUS in 2006 he get in charge of the competence center for production systems, an annual 65 M Euros business on developing and producing advanced jigs & tools for carbon fiber placement and aircraft assembly lines. With foundation of Premium AEROTEC 2009 Thomas served the Board of Management on several improvement projects. As Head of Supply Management Detail Parts and Aerostructures he implemented new order and operational supplier management processes. 2015 PAG decided to industrialize Additive Manufacturing for aerospace serial production and Thomas as Head of AM leads the activities on technology development, process maturity and reproducibility, qualification and serial production.

Standardization service of clay nanoplate products for gas barrier films
Dr. EBINA Takeo
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology
AIST Tohoku
Director-General
Dr. EBINA Takeo

Abstract

In 2021, the Technical Specification of clay nanoplate products for gas barrier films applications ISO TS 2126-2 was published. This technical specification is for selecting clay nanoplate products that are effective in improving the gas barrier properties of polymer clay nanocomposite films. It stipulates the characteristics to be measured of clay nanoplates, their methods, and the contents of the report. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology is preparing to start this report issuance service in 2022fy. This service is an advanced initiative to promote the social acceptance of nanomaterials. In this talk, the contents of the report issuing service and how to receive this service will be explained.

Interlaboratory comparison of Gas Transmission Rate for Nanocomposite Gas Barrier Films
Dr. Yoshida Hajime
AIST
National Metrology Institute of Japan, Research Institute of Engineering Measurement, Pressure and Vacuum Standard Group
Dr. Yoshida Hajime

Abstract

Ensuring gas-barrier-package-products is important to keep their quality well in the fields of foods, medicines, electro devices and so on. When polymer materials are used for packaging, permeations of water vapor and oxygen often cause short-product-life. Clay-polymer nanocomposite films are widely used because of their low gas permeability. The committee of standardization and certification of nanomaterials in AIST consortium "Clayteam" has started discussion to establish a certification program for nanomaterials and nanocomposite gas barrier films. An interlaboratory comparison using the nanocomposite films was conducted to confirm the reliability of gas transmission rate measurements for water vapor and oxygen. The results will be presented.

Standardization related to resource circulation of plastics including biobased and biodegradable plastics
Dr. KUNIOKA Masao
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)
Standardization Promotion Center
Standardization Officer
Dr. KUNIOKA Masao

Abstract

Plastics production from fossil resources, marine pollutions by plastics litter and microplastics are big environmental problems which shall be solved internationally. To solve these problems, 3R (reuse, reduce, and recycle) for plastics products are most important issues, innovations for biodegradable plastics which are used for plastics leaked to environment and biobased plastics which reduce the amounts of fossil-based plastics, are also important. Evaluations for biodegradable and/or bio-based plastics should be based on international standards such as ISO standards which are discussed in ISO Subcommittee SC14 "Environmental aspects" of Technical committee TC61 "Plastics". Marine biodegradation evaluation methods are defined by ISO methods. New functional plastics with good biodegradability in marine, which is produced from biomass, will be evaluated by ISO method. Its market introduction will be promoted by certification of requirements defined in ISO.

Expansion of Innovative Craftworks Using Industry-Academia Collaboration Patented Technology
Ms. Saura Midori
TOHOKU KOGEI
Executive Director
Ms. Saura Midori

Abstract

Ever since its inauguration, Tohoku Kogei has been developing and manufacturing a variety of products using the Tamamushi lacquer coating technique.
The National Research Institute of Industrial Arts had valued the idea of making "not only ornamental but useful craftworks." Based on this philosophy and with the aim of enhancing the potential of Tamamushi lacquerware, we jointly developed with the Tohoku Center of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology a new type of Tamamushi lacquer coating technique that resists peeling and increases hardness.
We will present the significance of our patented technique being designated as a traditional craftwork by Miyagi Prefecture, along with our collaborative works with the animation industry, creators, and luxury brands. We will also share some example cases of industry-academia cooperation promoting the charm of the local area, and introduce the possibility that production in the area can lead to a sustainable society.

Profile

Joined Tohoku Kogei Co., Ltd. in 1997. Engaged in sales and planning for collaborative works with animation and luxury brands, as well as for industry-academia partnership projects, before assuming the current position in 2014.
In 2015, received the METI Minister’s Prize of the Sixth Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Award for "Development of Highly Durable Lacquerware with Nanocomposite Coating."
Obtained a joint patent with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology for "Coating agent containing clay, resin, and organic solvent, protective film using same, and product" (Patent No. 6943367) in 2021.
